How does starter motor work

http://www.davebean.com/images/EconoStarter.jpg

Frequently the selenoid and motor will be assembled in the same case, or the selenoid will mount directly to the motor case. Typically there are only two required wires for the starter motor assembly to work: the one from the starter circuit (closed by the igintion key) and the "always hot" huge wire from the battery. The circuits are completed to ground - often just through/via the motor body.

Somtimes additional wires are present to supply power to other systems. Also, sometimes there will be a redundant/precautionary grounding strap.

Pulling the Fuel Injector

http://0.tqn.com/d/autorepair/1/5/l/4/-/-/1injector_hole.jpg

With all of the other stuff out of the way, you're ready to yank the injector. Unfortunately, many people really do try to yank them out. Remember, your fuel injectors sit right in the middle of the delicate are of the engine, so any piece you break off might fall in, and this equals big pain in your fanny.

The safest way to remove a fuel injector is to use a fuel injector puller. There are other ways to remove fuel injectors, but if you aren't careful you could damage some expensive fuel injection components. Besides, the injector puller makes it so easy, just slide it underneath the lip in the injector housing and pop the injector out.

Your fuel injector goes into what amounts to a hole in the intake manifold (or your head if you're lucky). When you remove the injector, you leave this hole open. Be very careful to keep anything from falling in. This can be a real chore to fix.

In the immortal words of every auto repair tutorial, installation is the reverse of removal! You'll need to lubricate the new injector seals before they go in, and remember to go easy, don't force anything in.

Disconnecting the Fuel Injectors

http://0.tqn.com/d/autorepair/1/5/p/4/-/-/1wire_clip_on_connector.jpg

If your car uses a fuel rail to deliver fuel to the injectors, you removed it in the previous step. If you don't have a fuel rail, you'll need to remove a fuel line from the top of each injector. It's just as easy to remove, just do it carefully.

With the fuel delivery out of the way, you're ready to disconnect the fuel injectors. Each injector will have a plug at the top (or on the side near the top) that connects to the wiring harness. Most fuel injector wiring plugs are held securely in place by a springy wire (see pic). To remove this wire, just insert a flat head screwdriver in the space between the spring and the plug and pry it carefully away. It will come out easily. Don't lose it!

Disconnecting the Fuel Rail

http://0.tqn.com/d/autorepair/1/5/n/4/-/-/1remv-rail.jpg

If your fuel injection system has a fuel rail to deliver fuel to the fuel injectors, you will ahve to remove this before you are able to remove the injectors. This is an easy job.

First, disconnect the main fuel line at the end of the rail. There may be an additional line at the other end, so remove that one, too. The fuel rail is help in place by screws or bolts, depending on your car's setup.

Remove these screws or bolts. If your wiring travels over the top of the rail, see the next step to disconnect the wiring first. With everything disconnected from the rail, pull it away from the fuel injectors. Most fuel rails are just pressed onto the injector tops, once you've removed the hold down screws or bolts it should pull away, with a little oomph.

Starting the Job of fuel Injector Replacement

http://0.tqn.com/d/autorepair/1/5/y/2/-/-/fuel-relay.jpg

Before you begin the process of replacing a fuel injector or fuel injection rail, you need to think about safety. Always keep fire safety in mind when you are working with fuel. You also need to be sure you are wearing eye protection. Even if you've released the pressure in the fuel injection system, there could be some fuel flying when you start disconnecting high pressure lines and removing injectors.

Starting Out:

* Be sure to follow the procedure for relieving the fuel system pressure. Very important!
* Look over your car's injection system. Some systems are easily accessible and others are practically buried. Plan your attack so your job can be organized
* It's a good idea to get a fuel injector puller if you are removing fuel injectors. There are other ways to do it, but you risk damaging expensive fuel injection components.

Other Things That Keep a Car From Starting

http://www.askamechanic.info/askamech2/images/stories/How%20Fuel%20Injection%20Works/Bad%20Injector.JPG

With the major systems checked out, there are a number of other things you can check to see why your car won't start - if you have the patience.

* Loose Starter: Loose starter bolts will cause it to dance around and wiggle, failing to turn the engine over.
* Bad Injectors: A bad injector can throw the whole fuel system off and keep the engine from firing, especially when the engine is warm.
* Faulty Cold Start Valve: A failed cold start valve will keep your car from starting when the engine is cold. It can also malfunction and keep your car from starting when it's warm!

* Chipped Flywheel or Ring Gear: Your starter's gear connects with the gear teeth on your flywheel or ring gear (depending on transmission type). If one of these teeth becomes worn or chipped, the starter will spin. You'll hear loud screeches, scrapes, squeals and grinding if this is the case.
* Bad ECU or MAF If your engine's main computer or any part of the system's electronics go bad, your car won't start. Unfortunately you'll need to leave this type of diagnostic work to a qualified repair shop.

Fuel Related No-Start Problems

http://new-car-purchase.org/wp-content/uploads/fuel-system.jpg

If the starter is spinning and the sparks are flying, your no-start problem has got to be related to the fuel system. If your vehicle is fuel injected, there are a number of sub systems that could be the culprit. It will take some serious diagnostic work to figure it out, but there are some things you can check in the garage that will narrow it down, and could save you some money by avoiding a trip to the repair shop. Here are some things to check:

* Electrical Connections: There are plenty of electrical connections in your fuel injection system. Each fuel injector has a connector on top. There are connections on the air side of the intake and on the cylinder heads. Basically you should check every electrical connection you can find under the hood to be sure it's tight.

* Fuel Pump and Relay: To check your fuel pump, you can do a fuel system pressure test - if you have the equipment. Since most of us don't have that type of thing, we'll first check the electrical connections. Test the positive side of the fuel pump for current with a circuit tester. Be sure the key is in the "On" position. If there's current, move on to the next step. If not, you should check the fuse. If the fuse is good, your problem is the fuel pump relay.

* Fuel Filter: If the fuel pump is working properly and fuel is still not reaching the engine, the problem could be a clogged fuel filter. You should be replacing your fuel filter every 12,000 miles or so anyway, so if you suspect it could be clogged, go ahead and replace it.

the above items are things you can check yourself easily and with everyday automotive tools. There are many other elements of your fuel injection system that require electronic diagnosis. Unless you are familiar with this and have the right equipment, it is best to leave this to the pros.

Spark Related No Start Problems

http://idkf.bogor.net/yuesbi/e-DU.KU/edukasi.net/Peng.Pop/Otomotif/Banjir/images/busi-mobil.jpg

With the starter-related causes of your no-start problem out of the way, we continue the search for why your car won't start. If the engine can't get spark, there will be no fire. But don't crawl into the hole just yet. Spark is created by your car's ignition system (ignition means "to ignite). Ignition system troubleshooting isn't too difficult when you're looking for a no-start problem. The first place to check is your coil.

* Coil Testing: To properly test your ignition coil you'll need a multimeter that can measure impedance. If you don't have a multimeter, there is an easier test you can perform using simple hand tools. Test your coil and, if it's bad, replace it.

* Distributor Cap: Your no-start problem probably isn't caused by your distributor cap, but occasionally, especially during wet weather, a faulty cap can keep your car from starting. Remove your distributor cap and check the inside for moisture. If there is even a drop or mist of water inside, wipe it out with a clean, dry cloth. Inspect the cap for cracks and replace it if necessary. Once its dry, though, it'll work.

* Coil Wire: The starting problem could also be due to a broken or shorting coil wire. Inspect the wire to see if there are any obvious cracks or splits, then test for continuity using a circuit tester.

Did it start? No? Ok, on to the fuel-related possibilities.

Why Won't My Car Start?

http://image.motortrend.com/f/8321156+w750/112_0510_14z+2006_volkswagen_passat_36+engine_star%20%20t_stop_key_out_view.jpg

If you turn your car key and get nothing, or get anything less than an engine roaring to life, you might be in for a bad day. Starting problems can be very frustrating because there are so many things under the hood that can keep a car from starting. Heck, pretty much everything under the hood can keep the car from starting.

In order to troubleshoot a no-start problem, you need to start at the beginning of the line, the battery, and work your way back. Some tests for a no-start problem are simple, others are a pain in the neck and a technical nightmare. Nonetheless, you need to figure out why the car won't start, so we'll try to help. If your key won't turn in the ignition, try this fix.

Electrical No-Start Problems

* Check Your Fuses: Few cars have a fuse associated with the starting system, but before you go monkeying around with everything, check your fuses to be sure it's not that simple.

* Battery Corrosion: Over time your battery connections can become dirty, or corroded. This corrosion breaks the connection your battery has with the rest of the car, and it won't start. Try cleaning your battery posts and try to start the car again.

* Dead Battery: The most common reason your car won't start is a dead battery. If you have a battery tester that can measure cranking amps, test your battery to see if it's weak. If you can't test it yourself, you can test the battery indirectly by jump-starting the car. If it starts right away, your problem is most likely a dead battery. Replace the battery, and clean the battery connections to ensure good contact.

* Bad Igntion Switch: If your battery checks out, but the starter is still silent, it may be a faulty ignition switch. Turn the key to the on position (not all the way to start). If the red warning lights on your dash don't light up (and your battery connections are clean), the ignition switch is bad. If they do light up, turn the key to the start position. The dash warning lights should turn off at this key position (most cars). If you're not sure, turn on the headlights. When you try to start the car, the lights should either dim (a lot) or turn off completely. If they do, your ignition switch should be ok. If not, the switch will need replacement.

* Bad Starter Connection: Corrosion can not only keep your battery from connecting, it can affect any electrical component, especially the ones exposed to the elements like the starter. If you have a helper, you can test the connection by holding a circuit tester lead on the wire that engages the starter. This is the smaller of the two wires connected to the starter. Be sure no part of your body is near the moving parts of the engine - it could still start at any time! Have a friend turn the key and check the current. If you're getting current to the starter but it ain't spinning, it needs replacement.

If your starter spins freely when you turn the key, the problem lies elsewhere. Now you begin to check the other systems that could keep it from firing up.

Why You Should Replace Your Wipers Today

Replace your wipers today!

With this easy to follow, printable how-to with pics you can install new wiper blades on your car and save money! Why is it that we never seem to remember to change our windshield wipers? You know you need 'em, you know they're cheap, you know how easy it is to install new wipers, but your windshield is still carrying those worn out, useless strips of rubber.

There's one time we always remember to change our wipers - when it starts to rain. Unfortunately that's the worst time to tackle such an easy job. The next 10 minutes of your time, outside in the dry, sunny weather, should be spent replacing your windshield wipers, so check out these easy steps.

Removing the Old Wipers

Release then pull down.

The first step to replacing your windshield wipers is getting the old worn out wipers off. Be careful when removing them, the wiper arm is metal and your windshield is glass. One clumsy move and you could scratch or crack the windshield - not good.

To remove the old wiper, pull the entire assembly away from the windshield, it will prop itself in the raised position. With one hand holding the wiper arm, use your other hand to depress the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the metal arm. With the tab depressed you can slide the wiper off the arm by pulling the center toward the bottom of the wiper arm.

Safety Step: Don't Crack Your Windshield!

Safety First!

The metal windshield wiper arms that hold the wipers are spring loaded so that they keep your wipers pressed to the windshield in a storm. Unfortunately this means that without the soft wiper on the end, that metal arm can do some serious damage to your windshield!

Prevent the wiper arm from snapping back and hitting your windshield by carefully resting it against the windshield while you are getting your new wiper ready to install. Even if you just turn around to grab it, play it safe and "park" the arm in the down position.

*Park the wiper blade against the windshield to keep it from snapping back.

Measuring the Air

Air plus gas makes boom!

How do fuel injection systems know how much gas to squirt anyway? Somewhere along the line, somebody (probably at Bosch) realized that you could measure how much gas your engine needed by how much air it was sucking in. Once your engine starts, the measuring of air begins. Early fuel injection systems used a vane system, which was basically a flap inside a tube, to measure how much air was being sucked.

Later systems use a "hot wire" to figure it out. When you turn your engine on, the wire becomes red hot. As air is sucked past this wire, it gets a little cooler. The car's brain measures exactly how much cooler it's getting and uses this number to figure out how much air it's sucking. Then it squirts the correct amount of fuel into the engine.

There are lots and lots of variations to fuel injection systems. We've got electrnic fuel injection, mechanical fuel injection, systems with one oxygen sensor, systems with four oxygen sensors ... but the basics remain the same.

Direct Injection Diesel

Direct injection diesel.

With diesel engines making a comeback, there has been more focus in recent years on diesel efficiency. Direct injection diesel engines utilize an injector that sprays fuel directly past the glow plug into the combustion chamber.

The technology developed here allows for more complete burning of the diesel fuel, and thus better efficiency and less stinky smoke discharged into the atmosphere.

Multi ,Port ,Fuel ,Injection

Fuel rail style fuel injection.

Multi-port injection is still widely in use today. So far it's the most efficient method of metering gas into the engine. Multi-port fuel injection, also known as MFI, consists of an injector for each cylinder in the engine. This injector sprays fuel directly through the intake valve or valves into the combustion chamber. Each injector is activated separately by wire.

Early versions of this system, such as CIS, Jetronic and Motronic utilized a fuel distributor that metered fuel to the injectors through separate fuel lines. Later versions utilize a single fuel line that connects to a fuel rail on top of the engine. The injectors take gas from the central fuel rail and squirt it into the engine when told to do so.

Single Port Fuel Injection

http://www.marutisuzuki.com/cars-images/image/Single-Port-Fuel-Injection.jpg

Single port fuel injection systems spray gas into a central intake, that then sucks the gas and air into the engine all at once. This was sort of an in-between invention that combined a carburetor and fuel injection.

Most European and Japanese cars skipped this step and went directly to multi-port fuel injection, while American makes used it.

What Is Fuel Injection?

Fuel injector in action.

In the beginning, gas powered vehicles used a carburetor to get gas into the engine. This worked well, but when fuel injection came along, things changed quickly. Fuel injection, especially electronic fuel injection produces fewer emissions and greatly increases gas mileage.

The carburetor was an ingenious invention in itself. Your car's engine has 4 cycles, and one of them is a "suck" cycle. Put simply, the engine sucks (creates extreme vacuum inside the cylinder) and when it does, the carburetor was there to let the right amount of gas and air get sucked into the engine. While great, this system lacked the precision of a pressurized injection system.

Enter fuel injection. Your engine still sucks, but instead of relying on the suck, fuel injection shoots exactly the right amount of fuel into the chamber. Fuel injection systems have gone through a few evolutions, adding electronics was a big step, but the idea has remained the same: an electrically activated valve (the injector) spraying a metered amount of fuel into your engine.

Inspect Your Brakes!

Brake inspection is key.

Brakes are pretty much the most important safety device on your car. If you've even partially lost your brakes in the past, you'll remember the change of underwear that followed. Inspecting your brakes twice a year for wear and damage can protect you and your passengers while saving you money by catching any damage before it becomes too costly.

On many cars you can inspect the brakes without even removing the wheel. If your car has alloy wheels with spaces in the middle, you can get a proper assessment done by just peeping through the hole at the goodies. Whether you can peep through your wheel or you have to take the wheel off, be sure you have a clear view of the brake pads and the big shiny disc.

Let's inspect the disc first. It should be shiny from the inside to the outer edge, and fairly uniform. Don't worry if you can see slight lines in it, this is normal wear. However, if there are any rough spots or pronounced grooves in the disc, you should replace your brake discs. Brake discs should always be replaced in pairs so that your car's driveability and safety are not compromised.

Now take a look at the pads. You'll have to peek up to see them, but if you follow the surface of the disc to the top, you'll see the outside pad touching the disc. If there is 1/8" or less remaining on the pad, it's time for new ones. That's about the height of two pennies stacked. Don't worry, brake pads are cheap and replacing your brake pads is a no-sweat job.

Finally, take a look at your brake lines. Rubber coated lines should be soft and supple, not cracked and rigid. If you see cracks in flexible brake lines they will need to be replaced. Also be sure to inspect the hard, metal lines. These can become corroded, especially in snowy regions where chemicals are used on the roads.

Checking & Removing Your Wheel Bolts

Saving the top for last.

Checking Your Lug Bolts for Tightness
It may seem trivial, but the one out of 1000 times you check and find that you had a loose wheel, you'll thank yourself for the 999 times you checked and found everything tight.

To check them for tightness, you don't need to follow any sort of pattern like you do when you are tightening them for the first time. Just check that they are all nice and snug. What's snug? With the wrench on the bolt, lean over and put most of your body weight on the lug wrench. When it stops moving, you're snug. I like to start at the top every time so that I know where to stop.

Removing Your Lug Bolts
To get the bolts off of your wheel, you'll first need to "break" them before you jack the car up. You'll see how silly you look trying to unbolt your wheel while it's spinning ridiculously around and around. Chasing your lugs like a nervous cat is never a good look. Once you have them all slightly loosened, jack up the car. Never remove your lug bolts without your car jacked up! I like to start with the bolt in the three o'clock position and work my way around, leaving the bolt at the top for last. This way the wheel will stay in place until I take the last bolt off.

Proton Savvy Specificstion Review Pricing

http://www.autobursa.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/b2250bc902go22rs.jpg.jpg

The Proton Savvy is a supermini hatchback produced by Malaysian car manufacturer Proton. The car was introduced in June 2005 as a successor to Proton Tiara.

Following Proton's decision to discontinue the Citroën AX-based Tiara in 2000, a replacement model was required in order for Proton to reenter the supermini market. The replacement, originally codenamed the Tiara Replacement Model (TRM), was partially designed in-house by Proton but is powered by a D-Type engine by Renault.

The Savvy was launched June 2005 in Malaysia as a manual transmission-only model, followed by the introduction of Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) model in November 2005. Export models of the Savvy were introduced to the United Kingdom in September 2005. The Savvy was also among two models (alongside the Proton Gen-2) the now defunct MG Rover was seeking to rebadge when it entered talks with Proton's parent company in 2005. On January 19, 2007, a photoshopped facelift was released, sporting minor changes on the front and rear.

In 2006, Proton introduced a "Savvy Zerokit" variant developed in conjunction with the Proton's motorsports division, R3 (Race Rally Research), that includes an all-round bodykit and rear spoiler made from fibre-reinforced plastic, and 15-inch (380 mm) JRD 155 wheels. Additional options include "dark titanium" headlights, performance suspension and a performance rear exhaust muffler that increases the power output of up by 4 hp (3 kW) to 78 hp (58 kW).

The Savvy is also notable for being the first Proton car to undergo the first ever publicly-announced recall. On April 1, 2008, Proton Edar ordered the recall of all 34,000 Savvys on Malaysian roads (of which their production dates are before December 17, 2007) for an inspection and (possible) replacement of the rear wheel bearing, based on part defect found during random checks. The announcement was a precautionary measure over possibilities potential water entry into the Savvy's rear wheel bearing set might causes malfunction to its components.

The second generation Proton Saga, launched in January 2008, based its chassis on that of the Savvy, albeit elongated to support a sedan bodywork.
Unlike the Tiara, the Savvy's exterior design was largely developed in house by Proton, prominently featuring a clamshell bonnet design for efficient air scooping.[verification needed] The Savvy is powered by a 1.2 L D-Type SOHC 16-valve engine sourced from Renault, similar to the one used in the Renault Twingo and Clio. The reverse gear for the manual transmission model is placed at the top left which is the position of normal first gear position for conventional manual transmission cars. A locking mechanism is equipped to prevent the driver from accidentally shifting to reverse when shifting to the first gear, which can be unlocked by pulling up the black ring at the gear knob while shifting to reverse. This is a similar mechanism in many European cars, including Volvo and Renault cars from the mid-1990s.The Savvy, along with other in-house designed Protons such as the Gen-2, Persona, Satria Neo, Waja, Waja Chancellor, and second-generation Saga, feature signal switches placed at the left-hand side, unlike models introduced earlier, such as the first-generation Saga, Wira and Perdana. In Malaysia, there is a basic model called Savvy Lite, of which this model has most of the manually controlled mechanical parts and comes without "expensive" features such as the remote control, power windows and alarm system. The Savvy has received two known "Car of the Year" awards from two ASEAN countries, including the Cars, Bikes & Trucks's "New Straits Times/AmBank Group 2006 Car of the Year" Award in the Supermini category, and the "Best City Car" award at the 6th Indonesian Car of the Year 2007 awards. The car is also the only Proton model so far to be TÃœV (Technischer Ãœberwachungsverein) Certified.

2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7

2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 750Li Sedan

The 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is a new hybrid variant of the 7 Series sedan.
Introduction

We know what some people are thinking about the 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 -- it's another hybrid with costs that seem to outweigh its benefits. To an extent, these critics have a point. The ActiveHybrid 7 starts at more than $102,000 in short-wheelbase form (a long-wheelbase L model is also available), making it 25 percent more expensive than the regular 750 upon which it's based. And all you get in return is 13 percent more power, 15-17 percent better fuel economy and some extra standard features to sweeten the deal.

But BMW isn't claiming that this hybrid 7 Series is going to save the planet, or even that it makes for an enticing value proposition. No, the ActiveHybrid 7 is simply a logical reaction to the marketplace. BMW figures that there are plenty of people who've previously bought a Toyota Prius even though they could clearly afford something nicer. As BMW well knows, these drivers were led to Toyota dealerships by their environmental consciences, not their wallets.

Enter the ActiveHybrid 7, which will relieve both your conscience (of guilt) and your wallet (of an enormous pile of money). In addition to the 7 Series' inherent exclusivity, you can thank sophisticated hybrid technology for the latter. The gasoline engine -- a special version of BMW's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 -- can't shut off at low speeds like that of a Prius, but it derives useful boosts in both power and fuel economy from a battery-powered 20-horsepower electric motor. Additional fuel-saving tricks include an auto-off feature for the V8 at rest, regenerative braking and the employment of the electric motor as a starter.

Does it add up to a compelling automobile? By the numbers, perhaps not. If fuel economy is your number-one goal, there are better vehicles to buy than the 20-mpg combined ActiveHybrid 7. And if enhanced performance is a priority, the 7 Series' 760i variant or the Alpina B7 are likely better choices. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has its new S400 Hybrid, which undercuts the BMW's price by a fair margin and delivers better fuel economy to boot. But if you're somehow looking for a luxury sedan that combines hybrid street cred with sub-5-second 0-60-mph sprints and dynamic handling, the 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is the only game in town.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is a large luxury sedan available in 750i and extended-wheelbase 750Li trims. The base 750i comes with a wealth of standard features, including 19-inch alloy wheels, exclusive hybrid badging, a power-closing trunk, soft-close doors, automatic adaptive xenon headlights, an adaptive adjustable suspension, front and rear parking sensors, a sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding and auto-dimming heated mirrors and keyless entry/ignition.

On the inside, you'll find four-zone automatic climate control, 14-way-adjustable heated front seats with memory functions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, wood trim, leather upholstery and a leather-trimmed dashboard and center console. Standard technology features include Bluetooth, the iDrive electronics controller, hybrid information displays in the instrument cluster and iDrive display, a back-up camera, a voice-activated hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time traffic updates, and a 16-speaker CD/DVD surround-sound audio system with HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and digital music storage.

Some 750i options are grouped into packages. The Cold Weather package includes a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, plus a ski bag for the trunk pass-through. The Driver Assistance package adds a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system and automatic high beams. Stand-alone options include 20-inch wheels with performance tires, dark exterior trim, a surround-view parking camera, rear sunshades, various interior wood accents, satellite radio, a six-DVD changer, an iPod/USB jack, a NightVision infrared display with pedestrian detection and a rear-seat entertainment system.

The 750Li adds a self-leveling air suspension and a longer wheelbase for more rear seat space. In addition to the options listed above, the 750Li is eligible for a Luxury Rear Seating package, which includes power rear seats with cooling and massaging functions.
Powertrains and Performance

The hybrid 7 Series features a gasoline/electric hybrid power plant. The 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 is familiar from other BMW products but is extensively tweaked in this application -- there's no starter or alternator, for example. Its output is rated at 440 hp and 475 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor (powered by a trunk-mounted lithium-ion battery) adds 20 hp and 155 lb-ft to the mix. Thanks to the quirks of hybrid power measurement, total output is rated at 455 hp and 515 lb-ft; for reference, the non-hybrid 750 makes 400 hp and 450 lb-ft. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Efficiency is aided by an auto stop/start function that uses the electric motor to turn the car off at a standstill, and on again once the brake pedal is released with the transmission in Drive. There is also a regenerative braking system that recharges the lithium-ion battery during deceleration. BMW estimates about 20 mpg in combined driving (versus 17 mpg for the regular 750) and a sizzling 4.7-second sprint to 60 mph (versus 5.2). Like all 7 Series models, the 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 also features the Driving Dynamics Control system, which has four driver-selectable settings for shift response, throttle response, shock absorber firmness, power-steering assist and stability control.
Safety

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Optional safety features include rear- and sideview cameras, a lane departure warning system, a blind-spot warning system and infrared night vision with pedestrian detection that displays the images either in the main dash display or in a head-up display (if so equipped).
Interior Design and Special Features

As BMW's flagship, the 7 Series represents the company's pinnacle of luxury, comfort and cutting-edge technology. Supple leather and rich wood accents adorn almost every surface, and the highly adjustable front seats ensure comfort for virtually any body type. The iDrive system has evolved to become one of the best of its breed, employing a controller knob along with several physical buttons to simplify commonly used functions. Notably, the ActiveHybrid 7 includes some standard features that are options on the regular 750, including the premium 16-speaker sound system and keyless ignition/entry.

The rear seats are similarly accommodating for taller adults, and the extended-wheelbase versions offer even more legroom (by about 6 inches) and slightly increased headroom. Available rear seat heating and even a massage feature should satisfy the most demanding of passengers. Impressively, the trunk-mounted lithium-ion battery subtracts just 1 cubic foot from the standard 7's 14-cubic-foot cargo capacity.
Driving Impressions

The 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7's fuel economy gains are not insignificant, but this super-luxury sedan is most impressive when your foot's on the floor. Of course, the conventional 750 is already very quick, but the ActiveHybrid 7's additional power is noticeable, particularly when the electric motor comes online with an extra surge. Compared to other luxury hybrid sedans like the LS 600h and S400 Hybrid, the ActiveHybrid 7 has a firmer ride quality, even in Comfort mode. However, this yields a more engaging driving experience, making the 7 Series a hybrid sedan that's actually fun to drive on a winding road, even in the absence of the M Sport package (only available on conventional 7 Series models).

2011 Dodge Avenger Lux Road Test

By John DiPietro, Automotive Editor

Automotively speaking, one could say this is the era of the former underdogs. Leno used to crack jokes at Hyundai's expense and folks used to say that "Ford" stood for "Found On Road Dead." Well, within the past decade, these two companies figured out that if they actually just built reliable, high-quality products, they would sell really well. Who knew?

And now Dodge has gotten a clue, and the 2012 Dodge Avenger is one of several vehicles that shows the fruits of its newfound labors. The new Avenger is a peach that's so much better than its predecessor that we're surprised Dodge didn't give it a new name like Chrysler did with its similarly reborn platform-mate, the 2011 Chrysler 200 (formerly the Sebring). Then again, the "Avenger" moniker seems somewhat appropriate, as this midsize sedan seems bent on getting revenge by changing the opinions of those who mocked its forebear.

So how exactly is the virtually all-new 2012 Dodge Avenger better than the old one? More appropriately, how is it not? The powertrain, handling, ride and interior quality are all notably superior within its market segment. The $20,000-$30,000 slot of mainstream midsize sedans is chock-full of well-built, enjoyable cars such as the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima and Suzuki Kizashi.

Previously, Dodge's entry sat on the sidelines largely ignored, while better players such as these dominated the game. Now the Avenger finds itself scoring big thanks to its strong performance, engaging drive and polished demeanor.
Performance

This 2011 Dodge Avenger Lux is equipped with the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. With 283 horsepower, this is the most powerful V6 in the class of mainstream midsize sedans, and it's paired with a mostly cooperative six-speed automatic. The strong, refined V6 is hard to fault, doling out power across a wide range. Likewise for the automatic with its ultra-smooth gearchanges, which remain so even while under full throttle. But like many modern automatics, this transmission's fuel-efficiency-minded programming means that it gets into the taller highway gears sooner than you might expect and requires an aggressive boot to the throttle to get a downshift. That said, it does respond quickly when a burst of power is needed.

At the Edmunds test track the front-wheel-drive Avenger turns in some strong numbers. The dash to 60 mph from a standstill takes just 6.7 seconds and the Dodge runs down the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds. We did notice some torque steer from the front wheels when we laid into the gas pedal from a stop or from low speeds. But with nearly 300 hp being funneled through the front wheels, the little tug on the steering wheel isn't too bad and we didn't feel it under normal driving. Hauling things down reveals a slightly spongy but progressive brake pedal. The binders resist fade under repeated heavy braking runs, while the Avenger's 127-foot stopping distance from 60 mph slots in about average for the segment.

While driving our informal handling test loop over canyon roads, the Avenger impresses with its nicely weighted and precise steering, composed cornering attitude and commendable level of grip, easily making this one of the more enjoyable family sedans for driving enthusiasts. The data from the more formal track testing backs up these seat-of-our-pants impressions, with the Dodge turning in a 67-mph run through the slalom cones.

Against the EPA's combined fuel economy estimate of 22 mpg, we averaged 20.2, which included a fair amount of L.A.'s infamous stop-and-go rush hour traffic.
Comfort

Generously sized and padded, the front buckets are very accommodating for physiques of all sizes. The tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and eight-way power driver seat make finding an ideal driving position fairly easy. Well, that is once you get used to the seat buttons; they're too close together, which makes adjusting the angle of the bottom cushion an exercise in finger dexterity. Once you're under way, the seat's side bolsters provide decent support while you're driving along a winding road, yet aren't overly aggressive, so getting in and out of the car isn't a hassle.

The rear compartment is roomy enough for a pair of 6-footers, and there's generous space for feet under the front seats, a rarity that allows those longer of limb a bit more stretch-out room. But tall folks will likely find the seat cushion a bit low, as it trades some leg support for more headroom. That said, most of our passengers found the rear seat fine in terms of overall comfort and support.

As with its big brother, the Dodge Charger, the Avenger manages to provide both athletic handling and a comfortable ride. The Avenger swallows up the worst bumps and potholes that neglected, under-maintained city streets can throw its way without wallowing around after the impact. Indeed, this Dodge offers one of the best-sorted suspensions in the segment as far as providing impressive handling along with an absorbent ride. Furthermore, it's a quiet ride, too, as road, wind and powertrain noise are all well-muted at higher freeway speeds.
Function

Large gauges with simple fonts and simple, intuitive controls grace the cabin. And kudos to Dodge for sticking with its effective behind-the-steering-wheel-mounted audio controls — fingers quickly recognize the buttons, which allow one to not only click through radio presets but also seek new stations.

The available navigation system is easy to use as well, though it's somewhat annoying that it doesn't allow time to destination and distance to destination to both be displayed at once — it's one or the other. Other high-tech gizmos earned high marks, such as the Bluetooth connectivity that includes automatic phone book downloading and the heated front seats that also provide warmth halfway up the backrest.

With 13.5 cubic feet of capacity, the Avenger's trunk measures up more like that of a compact than a midsizer. But its opening is large, the lid swings up over 90 degrees to get out of the way and the space is optimized, as the trunk easily accommodates a pair of golf bags and a large travel case. The rear seat features a center pass-through for long, skinny items as well as split-folding seatbacks. A rear-facing child seat can be fitted to the backseat as long as the passenger riding in front is no taller than about 5-foot-9.
Design/Fit and Finish

Although the Avenger is virtually all new underneath and within, the junior Dodge Charger-style sheet metal is familiar and unchanged. However, the front and rear ends have been updated with a more aggressive crosshair grille and revised fascias and light clusters. To our collective eye, it's one of the sportier-looking family sedans out there and most staffers preferred its styling to its Chrysler 200 cousin.

The cabin is another story, as it's so different from last year that one may wonder if it is the same make and model. Cleaner styling and a big jump in materials quality are plainly evident. The dash and door tops are covered in quality, soft-touch materials, panel gaps are even and tight, and the leather seats are handsomely stitched. Apart from a somewhat brittle action from the turn-signal stalk, it's an impressive effort all around. Forget about being almost as good as the class leaders, because the new Avenger is right there with them.
Who should consider this vehicle

Midsize sedan shoppers who want enjoyable driving dynamics along with a quiet and comfortable ride should give the 2011 Dodge Avenger a close look. If they do, they'll also likely be pleasantly surprised at how nice the interior is and how strong and refined the available V6 powertrain feels.

Checking the Oil Level

Fill, check, fill, check

We didn't add all the oil because there may still be a little oil here and there we didn't account for.

Check your oil and add more until you're at the right level.

Be sure to put your oil cap back on! Oil spray can cause a fire.

Refilling the Engine Oil

Refilling the engine oil.
Now you're ready to fill the engine with oil. Unscrew the oil fill cap and insert your funnel. I like to buy the 5-quart containers of oil (cheaper) but if you're using single quarts that's fine, too.

Check your owner's manual to find out how much oil your engine holds. Pour a little more than 3/4 that amount into the engine. For example, if your car holds 4 quarts of oil, add 3 1/2.

If you're using a 5-quart container of oil, there is a guide on the side that shows how much oil you've put in.

You're not finished yet so don't drive off.

Installing the New Oil Filter

New oil filter.

Carefully screw the new oil filter into place. Remember, it has oil in it so don't forget to hold it upright. It screws on clockwise.

You don't need a wrench to install the new oil filter. Screw it on as tight as you can get it with one hand. Overtightening the oil filter can strip its threads and cause a leak. Of course, not tightening it enough can cause a leak. So screw it on as tight as it will go with one hand, but no more.

The New Oil Filter

Prepare the oil filter.

With the old oil out and the old filter out of the way, it's time to put the change in oil change. But before you install the new oil filter, you have to prep it.

Before you screw the new oil filter into place, lubricate the rubber gasket on the end of the filter with some new oil.

Next, fill the new oil filter with oil to about 2/3. It's ok if you go over that amount, it just means you might spill a bit when you screw it on.

Remove the Old Oil Filter

Try not to spill the oil.

Next you need to remove your old oil filter. Using an oil filter wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise until it's free. Be careful with it, it's still full of old oil that can spill and make a mess.

Some oil filters can be reached from the top, but for most you'll have to be under the car.

Catching the Oil For Recycling

A proper container keeps things clean.

Before you remove the oil drain plug, be sure that your recycling container is positioned underneath the oil drain. An oil change can be no fun if most of your time is spent cleaning up oil.

When you remove the drain plug, let it drop into the top of the recycling container. There's a screen on top that will keep it from dropping into the muck.

Let all of the oil drain out, then replace the drain plug, tightening it to your cars torque specifications (or "snug but not too hard" if you are sans torque wrench.)

Put the cap on the oil recycling container so you can drop it off at a location that accepts used oil -- most full service gas stations accept it.

Draining the Old Oil

Loosen the oil drain plug.

The first step in an oil change is to get the old stuff out of there. The oil drains out of the oil pan at the very bottom of your engine. The oil is held in by a drain plug that looks like a big bolt at the bottom of the pan.

Preparing For Your Oil Change

Oil change stuff.

Never change your oil while the engine is hot! Let it cool for a few hours, oil can burn you badly.

Be sure you have a safe area to do your oil change. Level, solid ground is a must so that you can safely jack up your car. I also like to put something on the driveway or garage floor underneath the engine in case you spill. Cardboard or a piece of plywood are great for this.
Before you even start to do your oil change, be sure you have everything you need to get the job done.

What You'll Need?

* Ratchet or open end wrench
* Oil filter wrench
* Oil catch/recycle container
* Funnel
* New oil filter
* New Oil
* Clean rag

Let's get to it.

How To Change Your Oil (The Real Down and Dirty)

How To Change Your Oil (The Real Down and Dirty)

Over in our "Tech Center" department we have an article called "Oil's Well That Ends Well." It's an excellent primer on the basics of oil changes, the whys and hows of protecting your car's most valuable fluid. We've pasted that URL below, as a reference. We suggest you read it before scrolling any further down this page.

Oils Well That Ends Well Welcome back. Now, what we want to do in this month's "How To..." is walk you through a step-by-step procedure for doing an oil change. A real nuts and bolts approach, if you'll excuse the bad pun.

Before we get into it, though, let's discuss something. Do you enjoy tinkering around the garage? Do you own your own hand tools? Are you okay with getting a little grease under your fingernails? If not, then this may not be the right procedure for you.

Look, we realize not everyone enjoys working on their cars as much as we do. For some of us at Edmunds.com it's a ritual, like Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July. Worse than that -- an addiction. We need our fix. If we don't feel 40-weight slathering over our hands every week or two, we begin trembling and convulsing.

How To Change Your Oil (The Real Down and Dirty)

You'll save roughly a hundred dollars a year doing this procedure on your own. Oh, and maybe another ten bucks or so when you say no to the guy at the quick-lube place trying to sell you a five dollar air filter for $14.95. Chicken feed for most of us in these flush times.

If this doesn't appeal to you, go to Jiffylube or Grease Monkey or your local quick-lube shop, shell out 30 bucks, and be done with it.

If, on the other hand, you do this procedure yourself, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing the job was done right, with the right materials, in its own good time. And that you completed a task (if you work for corporate America this may be the biggest benefit of all -- that you actually accomplished something). So if you've been contemplating a more active role in your car's life, or if you want to learn more about your vehicle, this could be a good place to start. Not only will you save a few bucks, you'll also develop a more intimate relationship with your transportation, never a bad thing in our book.

One more thing before we get started. Oil disposal has become a hot issue in the last decade or so. The EPA now levies a huge fine -- into six figures -- for improper or illegal oil disposal. The days of digging a hole in the back yard and pouring dirty oil into it are long gone. Before doing this procedure, we recommend you find a local quick-lube place that will accept your dirty oil at no charge. One of our editors has an arrangement with a local Jiffylube that accepts not only dirty oil but used filters too. It might be that Jiffylube has a corporate policy of doing this, for community relations, so you might start there.

Remember, it is illegal to dispose of used motor oil improperly.

Now, if you're still interested in tackling this task yourself, here's a list of tools and things you'll need to perform this procedure:

* a 3/8-drive socket set (metric will work for both)
* a combination wrench set (closed- and open-ended, metric)
* an oil filter wrench
* something to catch the old oil -- an oil pan, a used kitchen basin, a kid's pail
* a couple of empty one gallon milk containers with screw-on lids.
* a funnel and a one quart Ziploc baggie
* a lot of old newspapers and several dirty rags
* presoiled work clothes and, if you have long hair, a baseball cap
* two pair surgical gloves (optional; no, we won't ask you to cough)
* a new oil filter (see vehicle's owner's manual for requirements)
* enough oil to refill the engine (check back page of owner's manual for grade and number of quarts); we recommend name brands, such as Valvoline, Castrol, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil, etc.

STEP ONE: Before you do anything, pick out a flat spot on your driveway. Now take your car for a drive around the neighborhood. We do this to heat the oil and make it nice and thin, so it will drain more completely from the engine block. Drive the vehicle far enough and long enough so that the temperature gauge begins to register. If you don't have a temp gauge, or if you have gauges but they're broken, turn on the heater and drive until your feet get toasty. The engine is now warm. Park it in your pre-chosen spot.

STEP TWO: Turn off the engine, put the car in gear, and set the parking brake firmly. For safety, block the tires with several bricks or large rocks. Go in the house and put on your dirty clothes and cap. Come out and line up your tools.

Now slide under the car and locate the oil drain plug. If there isn't enough room to slide under, you may have to jack up the car to get beneath it. Raise the car with a hydraulic pump and settle it on jackstands. CAUTION: Never get under a car held aloft only by a jack. Always use jackstands.

O.K., now locate the drain plug. It should be about the closest thing to the ground, a fairly large nut with a slim washer under it. Sometimes it will even be labeled "drain plug." (Caution: Make sure you're not looking at the transmission drain plug. It's usually a larger nut. If not sure, feel the metal around it. The metal around the engine oil plug should be a lot hotter than around the trans plug. If still not sure, call a friend.) Find your socket set and pull out several sockets that look about the same size as the nut until you find one that fits over it.

STEP THREE: If you have them, put on your surgical gloves to keep your hands clean. Grab the socket wrench and put the correct-sized socket on it. Place it over the nut and turn it counter-clockwise. It won't budge? Try again -- really put some force into it this time. If it still won't dislodge after several tries, locate the same sized closed-end wrench and use that instead. After you get the nut cracked, work it slightly loose with your fingers. Not too loose, though -- you don't want oil all over the place.

STEP FOUR: Now take the newspaper and spread it under the car. Make sure to cover where the oil filter sticks out, because it drips after removal. Look up into the engine. See the oil filter? It looks like a miniature, upside-down version of the mountain from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Get the drain pan (or kitchen basin, or kid's pail) and slide it under the drain plug. Position it so the stream hits it just right (if the plug points to the side and not straight down, the oil will shoot out sideways like from a fire hydrant). Loosen the plug and set it aside. Most of the oil will drain in about two minutes.

STEP FIVE: Locate the oil filter wrench. Take the socket off the socket wrench and set it next to the drain plug. Slip the oil filter wrench onto the socket wrench. You'll probably want to use the short extension, too. The oil filter wrench is like a round dog collar that only chokes in one direction. Set it up to "grab" or "choke" counterclockwise. Slip it over the oil filter and give it a tug. It shouldn't be that tight. When you feel it give, loosen it a little more, then slide the wrench off and do the rest by hand. Careful -- it has hot oil in it! Make sure your face is not under it. Remove it all the way and pour the contents into the drain pan. Set the used oil filter right-side-up on the newspaper.

STEP SIX: Slide out, open the hood (if you haven't already) and remove the oil filler cap. Set it aside. This will help the oil drain a little easier. O.K., take a breather.

Now, here's the deal. If you're in a hurry, you can dive right in and finish the oil change. But think about it. Drops of dirty oil are still dripping down. Personally, we like to give it a good hour to drain completely. They don't do that in the quick-lube places. If you have the time, peel off your gloves and take a break. Grab a bite, drink some soda, watch the tube.

STEP SEVEN: O.K., you're back. Put your gloves on and get to work. Before you thread the new oil filter in place, dip a finger into the drain pan and coat the rubber gasket on the bottom of the filter with oil, and set it aside. This will help it seat better against the engine block. With a clean rag, wipe off the round metal circle on the engine where the oil filter fits, then thread the new filter onto the post. When it's finger-tight, either tighten it by hand if you're strong enough (it takes about one-half to three-quarters of a turn, no more: read the instructions on the filter), or flip the oil filter wrench over on the socket wrench and tighten it that way.

STEP EIGHT: We recommend using a new sealing washer on the drain plug. Put the washer in place and thread the drain plug back into its hole. Scooch it up tight with the socket set, but not so tight that you can't get it off the next time (remember your struggles earlier; better to have it snug but not stripped.) Now take the oil drain pan and the empty milk bottle and the funnel. If you have a friend, have him hold the bottle while you pour the oil into it. When most of the oil has found the bottom of the bottle, seal it with the lid, then wipe out the inside of the funnel with a clean rag. (We sometimes prop the drain pan against a wall and let it continue to drip into the bottle while we do the next step. You'll need an extra funnel to do this.)

STEP NINE: Set the cleaned funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in as many quarts as the manufacturer recommends. As the oil fills, begin cleaning up. Throw the newspapers in the trash and wipe down all your tools. Discard the empty oil containers in a recycling bin. After the oil is all in, twist the oil cap back on and check the dipstick for oil level, just to make sure. Take the old oil filter, place it in the Ziploc bag, and seal it.

STEP TEN: Start the engine and let it idle for about five minutes, looking for leaks. Place the milk container and the Ziploc bag in a box, and set it somewhere in the car where it can't tip over. Drive to the nearest oil recycling center (as we discussed, most of the national chains, such as Econo Lube N' Tune, Jiffylube, Grease Monkey, etc., will take your old oil and filters). Take a last look underneath for leaks.

That's it. Remember, changing your oil on a regular basis is the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your car. Refer to your owner's manual for exact time periods.
